Smokeless Not Harmless: Athletes Against Tobacco

Research shows that smokeless tobacco advertising targets youth. Young athletes are particularly vulnerable. Many mistakenly believe that using smokeless tobacco will improve their game.

The fight against tobacco has rarely been generalized to smokeless tobacco products. The "Building Capacity of Sports Coaches to Deliver Tobacco Reduction Education to Young Athletes" project built on the work of Alberta Health Services related to smokeless tobacco by developing and implementing workshops for sports coaches and athletes.

The goals of the program are to:

  • increase the capacity of coaches related to smokeless tobacco knowledge
  • increase youth awareness and understanding of the risks
  • promote the sustainability of the program by adapting a tool kit for coaches
  • share the program feedback with other Alberta sports associations

Did you know?

  • Smokeless tobacco contains over 2500 harmful ingredients
  • One can of spit tobacco is the equivalent of FOUR packages of cigarettes
  • Tobacco use accounts for 80% to 90% of oral cancers
